It’s Time For Your Health Insurance Check-Up

Being sick or hospitalized can leave you with a feeling of helplessness, and the high cost of health care can make the situation even worse. In fact, the daily hospital rate in some parts of the country is now as high as $1,000.

Unfortunately, medical debt can quickly become overwhelming, causing it to be one of the leading causes of bankruptcy. A Harvard study conducted in 2001 revealed that about half of the families who filed for bankruptcy did so in the aftermath of serious medical problems due to the overwhelming burden of medical expenses.

The best plan of action is to take some preventative measures before injury or illness strikes. One great way to do this is to perform a check-up on your health insurance benefits to ensure you are getting the most bang-for-your-buck by asking the following questions:
  • Does my plan cover pre-existing conditions? Sometimes, a plan may not cover treatments for an ongoing medical condition. Find out if there are limitations or a waiting period involved in your coverage, which could mean more dollars out of your pocket.
  • Is this coverage sufficient? Find out exactly what services are covered and learn what preventive services are offered. Ask if the plan places limits on medical tests, out-of-hospital care, mental health care and prescription drugs.
  • What does it cost? Research your premiums and co-payments. Explore the difference in cost between using doctors in the network and those outside of the network. Find out if there is a limit to the maximum out-of-pocket expense.
If your current insurance policy does not meet your expectations, research other options, such as individual insurance. You might even consider group insurance through membership in a labor union, professional association, club or other organization.

Most importantly, do not be tempted to allow your insurance to lapse. The number of people who do not have health insurance coverage will continue to grow as workers lose jobs or remain unemployed. According to a U.S. Census Bureau report 43.6 million U.S. residents were uninsured at some point during 2002, which was up nearly 6 percent from the previous year.

Should you be faced with an unexpected emergency and no insurance coverage, you too could be overwhelmed with medical debt. It is best to protect yourself today by establishing an emergency savings account that contains at least three month’s salary. The comfort of knowing that you are prepared for the worst will do wonders for your mental health.
